Due to the risk of facing extinction, the major remnant sturgeon species found in Ontario are the white sturgeon. Though the big population of the species is located in the northern regions of the rivers that feed the Hudson and James Bay, the Southern and Central parts lead regarding extinction. However, despite all these draw beats; one can still get a good catch from the Ogoki and Albany rivers.
Fishing On Rivers
River fishing is always guaranteed during the spawning season which begins on June 15. During this time, most sturgeons will be out of season and can easily be spotted sitting back or swimming in slow moving water pools. Let the bell sinker on before making slit-shots at least 3 feet away from the hook. Once the sinker is at the bottom, take the time to allow the hook and bait to settle at the bottom. Once you note a jiffy, let go of the line and wait for some time for confirmation of a catch.
On average, Sturgeons caught from Okoki and Dusty Rivers weigh between 20 to 80 pounds but on rare cases catch of up to 150 pounds may be recorded. It is, therefore, advisable to try either dark or medium rod with high pound test lines and sharp hooks.
Those who consider baiting option, they may use cheese, a glob of worms, meat chunks or salmon wrapped in nylon sacks. It should be remembered that Ontario fishing charter does not tolerate fishing using game meat. Unfortunately, perch which is also not a game fish is prohibited.
Knowing what sturgeons like and what they don’t like is highly necessary for a big catch. There is nothing that moves Sturgeons like the rotting smell from chicken or pork. Simply dry chunks of chicken and pork meat in the sun and let them rot for some days before using them to attract sturgeons.
Similarly, for guaranteed catch, do not bring Pike meat near sturgeons for you will not catch any sturgeon! After dissecting pike, it is advisable to dispose the remains away from the lake to avoid the smell from repelling the sturgeons.
Fishing in lakes could be tiresome taking into consideration the space factor. Begin by spreading four hooks in a single file and then tie 30-inch line on a three-way swivel. Make another tie 1 oz bell sinker. Tie the three-way-swivel again to the 30-inch line and finally tie to float. The float ought to be sizeable so that it can pull the line from the bottom without moving the sinker. Proceed by connecting four hooks (30 inches apart) to reel lines and join the lines with three-way-swivels.
After successfully creating the lines, steer boats to fishing points and to drop the lines. Move the away slowly so as to maintain tightness to lines for baits to spread.
